And the culmination of a long, arduous college football season and first ever 12-team playoff was given the full treatment.

ESPN’s main feed was presented in 4K definition for the first time, Joe Pompliano reported.

This was available on Comcast, Direc TV, Dish, Optimum, Sling, Verizon and YouTube TV.

The main broadcast has been in 1080p up until now with 4K available on another channel.

“Looks awesome on DirecTV,” one fan said.

Another commented, “Higher-quality broadcasts make sports more immersive and enjoyable for fans.”

While a third went as far as saying, “Should have been an option the last 5 years.”

ESPN went all out with coverage of the National Championship Game.

First Take with Molly Qerim and Stephen. A Smith at 10 am ET was shown live from Atlanta, Georgia.

And the Pat McAfee Show from midday ET originated from Mercedes-Benz Stadium itself.

There was also a College GameDay show from 5 pm ET before the main event began at 7.30 pm ET.

Regular shows such as NBA Today and NFL Live were instead shown on ESPN2 rather than the main channel.

Ohio State’s win Monday night was the last round of the 12-team playoff.

ESPN’s coverage of the new tournament began before Christmas with the first round.

The quarterfinals were played over New Year with the semis then on January 6 and 7.

The delay to the semifinals from their usual spot on New Year’s Day was one reason behind a drop in ratings.

Viewership for the CFP semifinals was down 17 per cent from last year.

They drew an average of 19.2 million viewers.

That is down from the 23.2 million average for the semifinals in 2023.

Those games last year fell on a holiday in the United States, which tends to lead to larger audiences.
