Walmart shopper uses self-checkout prompt to lash out at chain after it ‘refuses’ to roll out payment method option

A WALMART shopper has shared how they send a message to the chain in response to not integrating a particular payment method across its stores.

America’s largest retailer is one of the very few chains that does not allow customers to complete purchases using Apple Pay.

Chiefs say they prefer shoppers to use an in-house app, but it has not stopped customers from complaining.

Shoppers have begged the chain to roll out Apple Pay, but so far, pleas have not materialized into action.

One clever customer revealed how he sends a message to the company.

“At my local Walmart, self-checkout consistently prompts for a star rating,” Alex said on X.

“I always give it one star due to their refusal to accept Apple Pay.

“Perhaps they’ll take the hint if everyone does the same.”

Walmart’s apparent refusal to roll out Apple Pay is one of the most common complaints flagged by shoppers.

Customers have begged the chain to embrace modernity and “get with the times” but the company is still standing firm.

Doug McMillon, the Walmart CEO, has delved into the reasons why the chain has not rolled out Apple Pay.

He told Stratechery at the time conversations with Apple were ongoing.

“Maybe we will at some point,” he teased.

“I think in our case, we would like to have the customers open our app in the store all the time.”

Walmart shoppers can use the Walmart Pay app to complete store purchases.

It is a contactless tool that allows shoppers to leave credit cards at home without feeling embarrassed at the register.

Why doesn’t Walmart offer Apple Pay?

CEO of Walmart Doug McMillon has revealed why stores don’t offer Apple Pay on Stratechery with Ben Thompson.

Though using Apple Pay at the retailer has been an ongoing conversation, McMillon emphasized that “We would like to have the customers open our app in the store all the time.”

The app can be used to help find items in the store, but it can also be used to pay for your purchases.

“That’s one of the things that we would like people to use our app for,” he said.

Walmart Pay allows shoppers to save their credit cards to the app.

And they can choose how they want to pay for their items.

Shoppers can use the Walmart app or camera to hover over a QR code that appears on the self-checkout register.

Users must listen out for a chime, meaning the payment has been completed.

Shoppers do not receive a paper receipt when they pay for items via Walmart Pay.

All receipts are sent electronically.

Hobby Lobby is another retailer that doesn’t allow shoppers to pay for goods via Apple Pay.

However, the contactless service has been rolled out across Home Depot’s network of stores.

The policy change came after the company had been bombarded with pleas from frustrated customers.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers have also spotted their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.
