Vanity Fair is overhauling its publication and some key staff members, just six weeks into the leadership of new global editorial director Mark Guiducci.
The 37-year-old former creative editorial director of Vogue — a fellow Condé Nast staple — announced Tuesday that the publication will be scaling back certain efforts, such as “news aggregation, reviews and trade coverage,” as part of a “new editorial strategy,” according to a copy of a staff memo obtained by Variety.
A source told Variety that chief critic Richard Lawson and Hollywood correspondents David Canfield and Anthony Breznican are among the new regime’s sacrifices, as are The Hive and the Hollywood Daily verticals as they pivot from a “siloed vertical structure to focus on Vanity Fair as a whole.”
“This does not mean we are becoming less ambitious,” Guiducci wrote in the memo. “The opposite is true. Transformations are not without difficulty.”
At the same time, Vanity Fair is hiring a trio of correspondents to focus on Hollywood, Washington and style, as well as 10 other roles, including a global creative director and two senior editors. They’re also putting out a call for producers as well as “an entirely new social team.”
The makeover will include a “redesign of the magazine that will influence the look of Vanity Fair on every platform, including our live events.”
Guiducci was named as the magazine’s new head honcho in mid-June, following Radhika Jones’ exit after seven years.
Jones, 52, announced her departure to staffers in April, explaining that she’d begun to feel “the pull of new goals in my life, around family and friends and writing” and wanted to avoid the “horror of staying too long at the party,” according to The New York Times.
The year has so far provided a steady slew of shakeups for Condé Nast, whose global chief content officer Anna Wintour announced in late June that she would step down as Vogue’s editor-in-chief after 37 years in the coveted role.
