A man is dead after a shooting that involved Chesterton Police on Gateway Boulevard in front of the Hilton Garden Inn Wednesday morning.
Chesterton Police Chief Tim Richardson said he couldn’t comment as the Indiana State Police were handling the investigation.
Richardson said he couldn’t respond to questions about whether an officer was struck during the confrontation.
A news conference was planned for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Chesterton Police Station, said Sgt. Glen Fifield, public information officer for Indiana State Police’s Lowell Post. He also refused to comment on whether an officer was struck.
Chesterton Police were originally called at 8:06 a.m. to Gateway Boulevard.
It was apparent from the scene that the shots were fired in the middle of Gateway Boulevard in front of the Hilton Garden Inn.
There were more than 50 yellow cones, marking evidence in the middle of Gateway Boulevard where the shooting occurred.
Most of the cones were covering shells.
A pistol was also in the middle of the street.
There also appeared to be packs used by emergency workers discarded in the middle of Gateway Boulevard.
The body of a man lay underneath a blood-stained white sheet at the northeast corner of Gateway Boulevard and Matson Drive.
Scores of law enforcement officers descended on the scene. The Porter County Sheriff’s Office, Valparaiso Police and Porter Police were there to assist the Chesterton Police and Indiana State Police in securing the wide-ranging scene. Porter County Prosecutor Gary Germann was also on the scene.
