NFL Draft first-round pick from just three years ago brutally cut from roster after making $13.7m in career earnings

A FORMER first-round pick has been released from an NFL team recently.

The Washington Commanders cut a defensive end two days after the team’s Week 7 win over the Carolina Panthers.

On Tuesday, the Commanders released 2021 first-round pick Jamin Davis.

He was the No. 19 pick in that draft and started at linebacker for his first three seasons.

This offseason, new head coach Dan Quinn moved Davis to an edge rusher.

The Kentucky product did show improvements during training camp and made the initial 53-man roster.

However, Davis appeared in just five of Washington’s seven games this season and recorded just 12 tackles.

He became the fifth first-round pick since 2019 who is no longer donning the burgundy and gold.

Most recently, the Commanders traded their 2022 first-round pick receiver Jahan Dotson to the division rival Philadelphia Eagles in August.

Each of the struggling first-round picks came from under head coach Ron Rivera.

Washington has also received less-than-stellar results from 2023 first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes Jr.

Davis started 36 games at linebacker in his first three campaigns, posting seven sacks, one interception, and two forced fumbles.

The Commanders recently activated defensive end Efe Obada which helped the team make the decision to lose Davis as a backup.

Washington created a roster spot to activate linebacker Jordan Magee.

Luckily for Washington, they have a 5-2 record and sit in first in the NFC East.

They are off to their best start since 2018.

The Commanders are coming off a blowout 40-7 win over the Panthers.

Even the disappointing Forbes Jr. recorded an interception in the contest.

Unfortunately for Washington, rookie star quarterback Jayden Daniels left the game with a rib injury.

His status for the Week 8 4:25 pm Eastern matchup with the Chicago Bears doesn’t look optimistic.

Quinn told reporters on Wednesday that Daniels didn’t participate in practice and that Marcus Mariota took first-team reps.

Daniels has completed 75.1 percent of his passes for 1,410 passing yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions.

He has also posted 66 rushing attempts for 372 yards and four rushing touchdowns.
