New Jersey bus driver with 27 passengers drank before crash: cops

A New Jersey bus driver transporting 27 passengers was charged with drunk driving following an early morning crash.

Shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday, New Jersey State Troopers were sent to investigate a single-vehicle crash involving a school bus in Knowlton Township. They discovered a disabled vehicle with “heavy front end damage” in the left lane of Interstate 80, according to the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.

Aboard the bus were 25 children and two adults. Cops said driver Pierre R. Tranquilus of East Orange, N.J., “showed signs of impairment and was unable to pass Standard Field Sobriety Tests.”

The 47-year-old driver was issued several summonses including possessing an open alcohol in a motor vehicle and DWI, according to officials. He faces up to 10 years in a New Jersey State Prison if convicted of either offense.

Authorities said at least one injury was reported, but offered no details.
