Dozen of motorists were hurt in a series of New Jersey car crashes Sunday.
The “chain-reaction” caused 47 injuries beginning with a bus rear-ending another bus in Chesterfield shortly before 1 p.m., according to NJ.com. NBC News said at least one of those buses was headed from Virginia to New York City.
Three vehicles traveling behind the northbound buses added to the wreckage when they too became ensnared in the afternoon pile-up outside Philadelphia.
Four people in an SUV and four others in a pickup truck were brought to an area hospital shortly after 2 p.m. when they crashed heading southbound in the same area while traffic was still congested because of the earlier crash, NJ.com reported.
That collision caused heavy delays as well. In all, 39 people were reportedly hospitalized with minor injuries.
CBS News said the first crash occurred between a pair of Van Hool-made buses. Photos of a vehicle owned by FlixBus being towed from the first crash site appeared to confirm NBC’s report on one of that company’s vehicles being involved.
FlixBus couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. The transportation company told NBC it was “aware of the accident,” though its services are operated by independent partners.
Garden State travel hasn’t been easy in recent days. Newark Liberty International Airport has encountered such heavy delays in the past week that United Airlines decided to cut 35 daily flights involving that location.
