A Jersey Shore man was sentenced to 50 years in state prison for killing a Newark man in a machete attack early last year, officials announced Tuesday.
Terrance Bailey, 35, of Aberdeen, Monmouth County, was found guilty in March of murder and a weapon-related charge in the killing of 28-year-old Daniel Haas Jr. on Feb. 20, 2024.
Bailey and an unidentified accomplice pursued the victim while brandishing a firearm on Cathedral Ct. in Newark, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II said, according to the Daily Voice.
When the pair caught up with Haas, they killed him with a machete-style knife in what Assistant Prosecutor Julianne Bollettieri described as a “brutal and heinous attack.”
“The state hopes that this 50-year sentence will help provide a sense of closure to the family of Daniel Haas, Jr.,” Bollettieri said, NJ.om reported. “We hope that this lengthy sentence will deter other individuals from committing such violent acts in the future.”
Bailey will have to serve 85% of his sentence — or 42 years and six months — before he is eligible for parole, in accordance with New Jersey’s No Early Release Act (NERA).
Officials have not revealed what may have led to the fatal attack.
His accomplice remains at large, authorities said. Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office at (877) 847-7432.
