Lansing Community College in Lansing, Michigan, is involved in a class action lawsuit and has agreed to settle up without admitting guilt.
The community college allegedly failed to prevent a data breach between December 25, 2022, and March 15, 2023, that exposed sensitive information in the school’s system, per the settlement website.
Subsequently, employees, students, potential students, vendors, and others may have had their personal information such as names and Social Security numbers exposed.
Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit argued that Lansing Community College could have averted the data compromise by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures.
The community college has not admitted wrongdoing but agreed to pay $1.45 million to resolve the claims.
Anybody who experienced losses as a result of the data breach is eligible to make a claim.
Under settlement terms, class members in the data breach case can receive either documented loss payments or alternative cash payments.
Claimants will need to provide proof of damages, such as credit card or bank statements, invoices, telephone record or receipts.
Class members may be reimbursed up to $2,000 in documented losses, which include bank fees, communication charges, credit expenses, fraudulent charges, and more.
Those who did not experience losses from the data breach or who don’t have documentation of their losses can claim alternative cash payments.
However, those who do not qualify for the settlement are warned not to file a claim, and there is a penalty for incorrectly doing so.
These payments will vary based on the number of class members and the amount left in the settlement fund after documented loss payments are handed out.
As part of the settlement terms, Lansing Community College also agreed to take steps to improve its cybersecurity to better protect student and employee information.
Some of the changes included enhancing multi-factor authentication, updating software, resetting compromised passwords, and implementing new endpoint detection and response software.
The deadline to file a claim is January 20, 2025 – just one week from now.
The final approval hearing for the class action lawsuit settlement is set for January 21, 2025.

What’s a class-action settlement?
Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or ‘classes,’ a way to band together in court.
These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.
When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.
Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.
These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.
Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.
Here are some other class action settlements that Americans could qualify for.
Drivers can still get $100 payment from the $1.2 billion pot even though deadline has passed.
Americans could score payments up to $5,000 from physical therapy data breach settlement without proof.
