Autism Hero, Elgin police hosting documentary screening
Autism Hero Project, in collaboration with the Elgin Police Department, is presenting a free screening of their documentary “#HeroesUnite – The NEED for First Responders’ Autism Training” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, in Herrick Chapel at Judson University in Elgin.
The event focuses on the need for autism training among first responders and to promote a more inclusive approach to emergency response, according to social media posts.
After the film, there will be a Q&A session featuring representatives Autism Hero Project representatives, Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley, state Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser and other officials.
A series of short videos that showcase the Autism Hero Project’s impact on the community will be shown as well.

Elgin Township in dire need of dog food to help seniors’ pets
Elgin Township is seeking donations of dog food to help seniors who are unable to feed their pets.
According to a post on the township’s Facebook page, the pantry is almost completely out of dog food and recently could not adequately help a woman who needed food for her animals.
The pantry can only accept new, unopened and unexpired cans and bags of dog food. Donations can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Elgin Township office, 729 S. McLean Blvd., Elgin.

‘Chocolate Drop Drag Benefit Brunch’ being held Sunday
Open Door Health Center of Illinois’ “Chocolate Drop Drag Benefit Brunch” will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at The Highland Loft Event Venue, 168 E. Highland Ave., Elgin.
The brunch, hosted by Moana Lotte, will raise money for the work being done by nonprofit Open Door Health Center of Illinois, according to the organization’s website. There will feature six drag performances, brunch and a complimentary chocolate martini. Attendees are welcome to dress as their favorite divas, the site said.
Tickets are $65 each and can be purchased at odhcil.org/event/chocolate-drop-drag-benefit-brunch.

Banners honoring veterans now on display in Carpentersville
Banners honoring living and deceased Carpentersville residents who are or have served in the military are on display along Main Street through November.
The banners are displayed alphabetically by last name, according to a post to the village’s Facebook page. For the first two weeks of the month, the banners showcase vets whose last names begin with the letters A through L. For the last two weeks, veterans with last names beginning with M through Z are on display.
Carpentersville started the banner program to honor former military members for Veterans Day 2023.
