De’Vondre Campbell storms off field after ‘refusing to play’ as San Francisco 49ers teammates call for him to be cut

LINEBACKER De’Vondre Campbell was done playing football during Thursday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, and his San Francisco 49ers teammates were not happy, to say the least.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed the situation concerning Campbell after the 12-9 home loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Shanahan said to reporters that Campbell told the team he didn’t want to play in the third quarter.

“He said he didn’t want to play today,” the veteran coach said, via ESPN.

The 44-year-old Shanahan coach then said to the media that it was the first time in his head coaching career that a player didn’t want to play when asked.

The Prime Video cameras displayed clips of the 31-year-old Campbell with his helmet in his hand, walking off the field, and heading to the locker room during the fourth quarter.

Campbell, who started 12 games for San Francisco this season, was replaced Thursday by linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who made his season debut and came back from an Achilles injury he suffered during last season’s Super Bowl.

After Greenlaw felt what Shanahan described as “tightness” during the second half, Campbell refused to enter the game at linebacker.

It’s likely that Campbell won’t be kept on the team after the Week 15 game, and 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward revealed that he thinks Campbell handled the situation poorly.

“He’s probably gonna get cut soon,” Ward said to reporters.

Ward also said that Campbell refusing to play was “some sucka s**t” and that he “hurt the team” as San Francisco was short at the position.

San Francisco tight end George Kittle was discouraged by Campbell’s decision.

“It’s just dumb. It’s just stupid. It’s very immature,” the Pro Bowl tight end said, per 95.7 The Game.

“I just don’t see how you could do something like that to your team.”

Shanahan was noncommital when asked if the team will cut Campbell.

The nine-year NFL veteran entered the game with 79 tackles.

Campbell is in his first season with the 49ers.

He has spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, and Green Bay Packers.

After the loss, San Francisco has less than a one percent chance to make the playoffs.

They are in last place in the NFC West with a 6-8 record.

The 49ers will face the Miami Dolphins in Week 16.
