Cardi B is being sued for assault and battery two years after allegedly hitting a woman with a microphone at a Las Vegas concert, for which local police previously declined to press charges.
The plaintiff, identified only as Jane Doe, said the Bronx-raised “Bodak Yellow” rapper “suddenly and forcefully threw her microphone directly” at her, according to the lawsuit obtained by Entertainment Weekly.
The incident occurred at Drai’s Beachclub in July 2023, after the 32-year-old Grammy winner allegedly called on concert attendees to “splash water on her … implicitly authorizing and inviting light splashing from drinks,” which they did.
But when Jane Doe did so, Cardi threw the mic “in apparent anger and without warning,” per the filing.
Doe — who’s also suing Cardi and Drai’s Beachclub for negligence — says she’s since experienced “physical pain, emotional distress, reputational damage, embarrassment and harassment from both media and members of the public.” She pointed to the $99,000 auction of the microphone as having impacted her emotional state.
As for the venue, Doe alleges they knew of Cardi’s “repeat violent conduct” given her involvement in a similar microphone-throwing incident there.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Cardi’s lawyer dismissed the lawsuit as “a transparent and pitiful attempted financial shakedown.”
“Apparently the opportunity to try to make money off of a celebrity was too much for some willing law firm to pass up,” said attorney Drew Findling, pointing to local authorities’ decision to close the case due to “insufficient evidence a long time ago.”
Though Las Vegas police were investigating in the immediate aftermath of the incident, it was quickly decided that no charges would be filed.
Jane Doe told EW this week the ordeal “significantly impacted [her] well-being and quality of life” and said she hopes to hold the musician “accountable for her misdeeds, as no celebrity is above the law.”
