A 17-year-old boy faces a murder charge after he allegedly shot two teenagers, one fatally, earlier this week in the West Lawn neighborhood, Chicago police announced Friday.
Police said the boy, who wasn’t named because he’s a juvenile, fatally shot an 18-year-old man and injured a 15-year-old boy around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 7200 block of South Avers Avenue.
The alleged shooter was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery. He is scheduled to appear at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse for a detention hearing Friday, police said.
The teen was arrested early Thursday morning, about 40 minutes after the shooting, in the 6800 Block of South Pulaski Road, police said. No charges have been announced for the two other teens police arrested shortly after the shooting.
The two victims were walking with a group of five on the sidewalk late Wednesday night when three people in the group pulled out handguns and fired at them, police said Thursday. Police arrested the alleged gunmen — two males and one female — after they fled the scene. They also recovered two firearms.
The 18-year-old man, who hasn’t yet been identified, was shot in the head. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide.
The 15-year-old boy sustained a graze wound to his cheek and was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition.
