A heat index topping 100 degrees will convert much of the tristate area into a sauna for the next three days, weather officials said Monday in yet another heat advisory.
Heat trapped by a high-pressure “dome” over the region, combined with humidity, will make the mid- to upper 90s temperatures feel as high as 100 degrees or more in parts of New York and northeastern New Jersey, with similar sensations in southern Connecticut, the National Weather Service said.
At night, temperatures will be in the 70s, the NWS noted.
The new onslaught comes after a bit of a break from last week’s sweltering spate of weather, and Mayor Adams issued a new warning.
“After a cool weekend, there is a heat advisory in effect for today, Tuesday, and Wednesday,” he said Monday morning on X, urging New Yorkers to take advantage of cooling centers, which can be found on 311. “Temperatures could feel as hot as 105 degrees, so everyone must take care of each other.”

Heat advisories are issued when heat and humidity conspire “to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time,” the NWS explained. “Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.”
There is also an outside chance that extreme heat warnings, when the heat index hits 105 degrees, might be warranted for the New York-New Jersey metro area and some inland spots, the NWS said.
The dew point temperature, which reflects the air’s water-saturation level, will be in the upper 60s to low or middle 70s, NWS meteorologist Matt Wunsch told the Daily News. Dew points in the 70s make for “really humid, really oppressive” heat, he noted.

On the upside, the sunny weather combined with a low chance of rip currents will make for some prime beach days, Wunsch said, while advising people to “take measures to be careful with the heat.”
Hot conditions will last until about 8 p.m. Wednesday, weather officials said. In the latter half of Wednesday, a relative cold front will bring “a pretty substantial break in the heat” and usher in a much more temperate weekend, Wunsch said, though it could come with severe storms.
