Walmart shopper stopped in tracks over payment method issue – store policy ‘forced them to abandon trip for week’

A WALMART shopper has urged the chain to change its payment policies after apparently being forced to abandon their trip to the store.

The disgruntled customer claimed they had to delay their visit for another week.

The shopper couldn’t hide how bemused they were after realizing they forgot their wallet, according to a post on X.

And it proved to be a problem as Walmart doesn’t allow shoppers to pay for goods via Apple Pay.

“Now because of my schedule, I can’t get back there for another week,” they said.

“Just put in Apple/Google Pay already.”

The shopper also pointed out they were not interested in using the chain’s in house app as an alternative.

Walmart Pay is a different form of contactless payment.

Shoppers can add their credit card details and pay for their goods using a QR code.

Alternatively, they can use their smartphone’s camera to hover over a QR code that appears on the self-checkout monitor.

Shoppers who pay for goods using Walmart Pay do not receive a paper receipt.

Instead, confirmation of all purchases is sent by email.

The tool means shoppers do not have to bring their credit cards, but Walmart Pay can only be used in the chain’s supermarkets.

It cannot be used in other outlets owned by Walmart like Sam’s Club.

Shoppers can also add gift cards to their mobile Walmart wallet but have to redeem paper coupons at the checkout.

Walmart is one of the few retailers that does not accept Apple Pay, and this has proved contentious.

Why doesn’t Walmart offer Apple Pay?

CEO of Walmart Doug McMillon has revealed why stores don’t offer Apple Pay on Stratechery with Ben Thompson.

Though using Apple Pay at the retailer has been an ongoing conversation, McMillon emphasized that “We would like to have the customers open our app in the store all the time.”

The app can be used to help find items in the store, but it can also be used to pay for your purchases.

“That’s one of the things that we would like people to use our app for,” he said.

Doug McMillon, the chain’s CEO, opened up about the chain’s decision not to roll out Apple Pay across thousands of its stores.

In an interview with Stratechery in April, McMillon said conversations were ongoing but championed the chain’s app.

“I think in our case, we would like to have the customers open our app in the store all the time,” he said.

Despite bosses’ reasoning for not rolling out Apple Pay, the decision has irked some who prefer to pay for items using their cell phones.

Customers have been frustrated because they’ve only realized that Walmart supermarkets don’t accept the payment method option at checkout.

Some shoppers have been so infuriated that they’ve abandoned their carts in response.

Walmart has been branded “embarrassing” for not rolling out Apple Pay, while others have begged the retailer to get with the times.

Walmart has not responded to The U.S. Sun’s requests for comment when approached over the issue.

Home Depot shoppers were also not able to pay for goods via Apple Pay but the company has since made the payment method change.

Chiefs made the decision after being inundated with a furious response online.
