Officials estimated Helene was to blame for at least four deaths: A sign fell on a car killing one in Florida. A tornado killed two in Georgia. A tree fell on a home in North Carolina killing one person.
Gov. Ron DeSantis reported a road sign crashed on a car on Interstate 4 on Thursday night near Ybor City. Wheeler County Sheriff Randy Rigdon reported the two who died in Georgia were in a mobile home.
According to the Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency, or MEDIC, the tree fell on a home Friday morning in Charlotte.
Fire rescue personnel continued their search on Friday morning after the former Hurricane Helene’s floodwaters trapped residents in their homes in northern Florida. Helene, on the record as strengthening into a Category 4 hurricane, weakened to a tropical storm over Georgia after making landfall near Perry in northwestern Florida’s Taylor County.
In South Florida, travelers experienced delays and cancelations. Miami International Airport reported 12 flight delays and 17 flight cancelations. The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport reported 21 delays and 15 cancelations.
Helene is the eighth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, from June 1 to Nov. 30.
