Mets’ Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz named NL All-Stars, but not Juan Soto

The Mets have three All-Stars — and one notable omission.

Pete Alonso was named a reserve for the National League roster, and Edwin Diaz was selected for the pitching staff, but Juan Soto was left off despite being a finalist to be an outfield starter.

The newly announced duo joins Francisco Lindor, whom the fans voted to be the NL’s starting shortstop.

The reserves and pitchers, who were unveiled on Sunday evening, are selected via player ballots and the MLB Commissioner’s Office.

This is the fifth All-Star selection for Alonso, who entered Sunday hitting .290 with 20 home runs, 73 RBI and a .929 OPS. Alonso was a finalist to start at first base but finished as the runner-up to Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 30-year-old Alonso has been an All-Star in each of the last four seasons.

Alonso, a two-time Home Run Derby champion and five-time participant, said he will not take part in the event this year.

Diaz, meanwhile, earned his third All-Star selection and his first since 2022. The hard-throwing closer entered Sunday with a 3-0 record, a 1.80 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 35 innings. He had 18 saves in 19 opportunities.

This is the first All-Star selection for Diaz since he suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

After a slow start to his record-setting 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets, the red-hot Soto entered Sunday hitting .267 with 21 home runs, 50 RBI and a .915 OPS. He was NL Player of the Month for June.

The 26-year-old Soto was a finalist for a starting outfield spot, but the fans voted in Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves, and Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker of the Chicago Cubs.

Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks; Kyle Stowers of the Miami Marlins; James Wood of the Washington Nationals; and Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres were named outfield reserves on Sunday.

The All-Star Game is scheduled for July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
