LIRR trains canceled, delayed or rerouted amid reports of smoke in tunnel

Long Island Rail Road trains were being rerouted, delayed or canceled Tuesday morning as firefighters responded to reports of smoke in the rail tunnel connecting to Grand Central Madison.

An FDNY spokesman confirmed units were responding to a two-alarm call, but had no further info.

An MTA spokeswoman told the Daily News that reports of smoke on the tracks first came in shortly after 8 a.m.

LIRR tracks connect to Grand Central via the lower level of the 63rd St. Tunnel, which also carries F train subway service on its upper level.

The location of the smoke condition was not immediately clear Tuesday morning, and there were no apparent effects to F train service.

Trains running on the Babylon, Port Jeff, Ronkonkama and West Hempstead branches were being rerouted to Penn Station or Jamaica. Port Washington service to Grand Central was suspended, and some trains on the Far Rockaway and Hempstead branches were canceled.

This is a developing story.
