Hy-Vee makes huge u-turn and axes in-store burger joint at 79 locations – but chain promises ‘brand-new menu’ is coming

HY-VEE has announced a huge U-turn to axe its in-store burger joints at 79 locations, but promised to replace them with a “brand-new menu”.

The classic burger restaurants will disappear from Midwest stores on February 4, when the Hy-Vee Market Grilles will take their place.

From then on all Hy-Vee restaurants will offer a new breakfast menu including omelets, biscuits & gravy, pancakes, French toast and a breakfast burrito.

Hash browns will also make a return to the breakfast menu.

The store said they designed the new menus to offer “a wider variety of choices for families, individuals and breakfast groups at an affordable price”.

A new lunch and dinner menu will also roll out over the course of February.

These will bring back a range of fan favourites, including the Market Grille burgers, BLT and club sandwiches and pork tenderloin sandwiches.

Popular options like wings and wontons will still be available.

A spokesperson said the new menus will also be more affordable, with a price point between $5 and $14.

Weekday hours for all Market Grille locations will be 6 – 11 am for breakfast and 11 am – 8 pm for lunch and dinner.

Breakfast will be available 6 am – 2 pm on the weekends, with a special brunch buffet offered at select locations.

All Market Grille locations will offer both dine-in and carry-out service, as well as third-party delivery.

Most locations will have counter service where customers order at the counter and staff will bring their freshly made order to their table.

Hy-Vee does not plan to lay off any employees as part of this transition, and said that staffers are currently being trained on the new menu.

The grocer also said it will not be closing down any branches during the changes.

Stores will get a makeover, however, which will include new signs and decoration.

After the transition, Hy-Vee will have a total of 221 Market Grille and Market Grille Express locations across the Midwest.

The chain recently has started to axe self-checkout at certain stores, hoping to improve things for customers.

Hy-Vee bosses have said they want to create a “better experience” for shoppers and hope more face-to-face contact with staff will help.

Spokesperson Tina Potthoff said some stores have scrapped self-checkouts in recent months.

At other stores, the scan and pay systems have been switched to speedy express lanes with a ban on baskets holding 12 items or more.

“We just want to provide a better customer experience in several of our stores by bringing back the face-to-face interaction with our employees that we had pre-Covid,” she said, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

She reportedly declined to give a full list of the Hy-Vee stores making the changes, but the 8701 Douglas Avenue store in Urbandale had scrapped all self-checkout lanes as of Monday.
