A suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting in Connecticut last year, which left a 23-year-old woman — who was an innocent bystander — dead, police said.
The gunfire erupted on Cleveland Avenue in Hartford in the early morning of July 5, 2024, WTNH reported. When officers arrived on the scene around 12:50 a.m., they discovered two people suffering from gunshot wounds.
A woman, who has since been identified as Shamyria Williams of Hartford, was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The second victim, identified only as a male in his 20s, was also wounded in the gunfire but was alert and conscious when authorities arrived.
Police said both victims were inside a car at the time of the shooting, but that neither of them were the intended target.
“Poor girl lost her life, she had nothing to do with any of this so very saddening, disturbing, shouldn’t have happened,” Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert said at the time.
On Friday, authorities announced the arrest of 35-year-old Jubul Walcott on charges of including manslaughter with a firearm, theft of a firearm and reckless endangerment, according to NBC Connecticut.
Police said the Hartford resident turned himself in shortly after authorities issued a warrant for his arrest. He’s being held on $500,000 bond.
While the exact circumstances surrounding the violence remain unclear, authorities believe it started out as an argument between two groups of people, who then started shooting at each other.
