One person dead in Roosevelt Island building fire, 3 firefighters injured

One person died and three firefighters were injured in a building fire Saturday evening on Roosevelt Island.

Firefighters rushed to the scene of the blaze at a residential apartment building around 6:04 p.m. near Main St. and River Rd. where one person was pronounced dead, the FDNY said.

“Our district is again mourning the loss of one of our neighbors from a fire, this time at 560 Main Street on Roosevelt Island. Their family is in my thoughts tonight, as are those who were hospitalized,” Council member Julie Menin said on X.

EMS transported the three smoke eaters to local hospitals where they were treated for moderate injuries.

The fire was brought under control around 7:39 p.m. The cause of the flames was still under investigation by fire marshals.

The fatal fire comes after an 86-year-old woman died in a fire in her Queens sixth-floor apartment Saturday morning just after 2:15 a.m. on 12th St. near 41st Ave. at NYCHA’s Queensbridge South Houses.

EMS rushed the woman to Mount Sinai Queens hospital, where she died a short time later. Her name was not immediately disclosed.

The Roosevelt Island fatality was the fifth fire-related death in New York City in the past week.
