In Schaffhausen, a centuries-old wooden boat still belongs on the Rhine — and the people who know how to move with it still keep the tradition afloat. In this episode of This Is Not A Travel Show, Marco travels to Schaffhausen to find out why. Marco loves finding out why people do the things they do. Sometimes, the answers are found on the water. For the second episode of This Is Not A Travel Show, Marco meets Hanna, who takes him onto the Rhine in a Weidling – a traditional wooden boat that has been part of life on the river for centuries. He also meets Oliver, who still builds Weidlinge by hand in his workshop. Together, they talk about the craft behind the boats, and why some traditions are worth keeping afloat. Along the way, Marco attempts to navigate a Weidling, explains how to float down the Rhine without a boat, and is joined by his dog Phoebe, who is experiencing all of this for the first time as well – and seems suspiciously good at it. Because this is not a travel show. It’s a show about Weidlinge, the Rhine and a dog on a boat.
